The Dual Challenge of Technology and Education: Opportunities and Crises of AI Application in the Asia-Pacific Region
As artificial intelligence technology expands rapidly across the Asia-Pacific region, significant progress is being seen in everything from infrastructure construction to medical applications. However, a recent OECD study warns that over-reliance on AI will lead to a decline in students' cognitive abilities, while the arts and cultural sectors have also begun to reflect on the soulless nature of AI.
The development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology is profoundly changing the industrial landscape and social structure of the Asia-Pacific region. At the infrastructure level, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) recently announced a major plan worth up to $70 billion, aimed at comprehensively upgrading energy and digital infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region by 2035. Key focuses include strengthening power grid connectivity, promoting cross-border electricity trade, and expanding broadband coverage. This policy serves not only as a cornerstone for regional economic development but also provides the hardware support necessary for the application of digital technology.
Meanwhile, the U.S. government continues to reiterate its commitment to regional economic, trade, and technology partnerships to Asia-Pacific leaders, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high standards of trade and cooperation during the digital transformation process, demonstrating the determination of major powers in the region's technological competition and strategic layout.
In terms of industrial application, the penetration rate of AI has shifted from the consumer end to professional fields. According to recent reports, global tech giants and startups are racing to develop "personal AI agents," such as the Muse application launched by Meta, which attempts to handle complex tasks by automatically understanding user intent.
In the medical field, the clinical value of AI is also highly regarded. United Orthopedic gathered over 200 experts from around the world at the 18th Global User Meeting for Joint Reconstruction (ARC) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to focus on the application of robot-assisted surgery and AI in digital orthopedics, showing that AI has become a key tool for improving medical precision and surgical efficiency.
Although AI shows potential in industrial applications, its negative impacts are gradually emerging. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) conducted the "Programme for International Student Assessment" (PISA) survey on over 760,000 15-year-old students across 91 countries, finding that excessive use of generative AI leads to "cognitive outsourcing" among students, which in turn causes a significant decline in scientific literacy. The study points out that students who are accustomed to handing over their thinking processes to AI are seeing their deep learning abilities eroded.
Furthermore, in the field of culture and art, Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki has publicly criticized generative AI imagery, arguing that it lacks the vitality and warmth of hand-drawn work by craftsmen found in Hayao Miyazaki's films. This also explains why the once-popular "Ghibli-style" AI image trend quickly faded in a short period of time.
The aforementioned developments represent both opportunities and severe challenges for the Asia-Pacific region. At the policy level, governments across the Asia-Pacific need to formulate corresponding educational and ethical norms while promoting digital infrastructure to address the cognitive risks brought by AI. In terms of industry, although the development models of AI assistants are diverse, their security and competitive strategies remain to be tested by the market. While the medical community is actively embracing digital transformation, clinical applications must still strictly follow evidence-based medicine to ensure that technological upgrades truly benefit patients rather than merely blindly pursuing automation.
It is worth noting that there are clear differences in attitudes toward AI across different fields. The tech industry tends to view AI as a productivity tool, dedicated to increasing the level of automation; however, the education and art sectors are more concerned with the subjectivity of "humans." OECD data reminds us that AI may weaken basic human cognitive abilities, while Toshio Suzuki's perspective emphasizes the essence that technology cannot replace human emotion and soul. These views remind the public not to over-interpret the omnipotence of AI, and even more so, not to ignore the "degeneration" risks that humans may face in the learning and creative processes after technology becomes widespread.
Subsequent observations should focus on the implementation efficiency of digital infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as how national education policies are adjusted to cope with the phenomenon of "cognitive outsourcing." In addition, as the personal AI agent market enters a polarized development phase, the competition between large tech giants and startups regarding privacy protection and system security will be the key to determining whether AI can develop healthily. All sectors should continue to monitor empirical data on these technologies in clinical and educational environments to balance the relationship between technological innovation and core human capabilities.
